This summer our staff day out proved a new challenge for some. A day kayaking along our local River Wensum through Norwich. Luckily it was a beautiful sunny day with minimal wind. With a mixed variety of experience between us from competition rower to complete novice. Pairings matching least with most training we all successfully embarked with no capsizing.
Meandering through our ‘fine city’ we saw various sights with the river offering a completely different perspective. Some of the latest arrivals ‘gogo hares’ were spotted. I noted sadly quite low number of swans, there used to be so many more and only two signets. We sauntered past Pulls ferry, around Norwich cathedral, past Norwich City football ground and behind the Colman’s mustard factory, so sad that we are losing an iconic Company after 160 years of production. The aroma of mint sauce wafted across the river.
As our arms began to ache we arrived rather timely at our destination for a spot of lunch. Balancing onto the jetty was rather more challenging for some but all stayed dry. After a lovely lunch we set adrift back to our starting point. Rather a slower return journey with few collisions or cap-sizing. Although a near miss of the overgrown embankment foliage was a close call. Even those with a fear of the water overcame their fears and enjoyed the experience.
A few blisters were sustained although not enough to put anyone off another venture!
